The Achik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM), Zikzak regional unit has written to the South West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner highlighting the poor conditions of the Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) School.

President of the unit, Sengrak D Marak stated that the school lacks basic amenities that have affected the school’s environment and its students.

He said during their recent visit to the school, several critical issues affecting the school’s environment were discovered such as lack of sanitation facilities, forcing students to go to the nearby forest for their needs.

With no provision for drinking water, students are also forced to travel a considerable distance to access water for drinking and bathing.  He said classrooms lack electricity, which prevents the use of fans, making the learning environment uncomfortable and unsafe, especially in hot weather.

Furthermore, the absence of a fencing wall around the school premises poses significant risks to the safety of the girls, the organisation said.

KGBV is a residential school for girls set up to ensure access and quality education for the weaker sections of the society. The school in Zikzak started functioning in 2012.

According to AHAM, the school then had several facilities in place, including functional classrooms, electricity, and computers for teaching and learning.  However, the conditions have deteriorated significantly, which is beyond the control of the principal and the school warden.

AHAM also urged the deputy commissioner to visit the school and take the necessary steps to address the issues.
