The local unit of the A’chik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM) has submitted an appeal to the Deputy Commissioner of South West Garo Hills over supposed migrants illegally settling in the areas of Takuranbari and Ishakuri.
The pressure group, in its January 23 missive, said that it wants joint checking of the settlements.
AHAM said it visited the site with villagers and A’king Nokma and found that many settlers possessed documents from Assam and were the beneficiaries of schemes, such as the PMAY and Jal Jeevan Mission, sanctioned by the Assam government.
The settlement has been going on for more than a year but, despite previous protests, nothing was done about it. AHAM claimed that the settlers commit various crimes and that their presence is against the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, which protects tribal rights in Meghalaya.
