Shillong, Jun 23: Former West Shillong MLA Mohendro Rapsang joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), marking his return to electoral politics.
Rapsang was welcomed at the BJP state office by party president Rikman G. Momin and cabinet minister Sanbor Shullai, in the presence of mandal members and party workers.
In his induction speech, Rapsang pledged his commitment to working for the development of Meghalaya under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said that under Modi’s dynamic leadership, India is on a trajectory of progress and respect on a global scale.
Rapsang said his priority would be addressing grassroots aspirations, adding, that his goal would be to align his efforts with the needs of the local community.
In 2022, Rapsang defied the Congress to back the NPP-led MDA without quitting the party. He lost to UDP’s Paul Lyngdoh in 2023 on an NPP ticket.
State BJP president Momin welcomed Rapsang but stated that no assurances on election tickets would be provided, stating, “We never assure tickets because in BJP everyone is welcome to strengthen the party.”
Momin also indicated that more inductions are anticipated, strengthening the party’s presence and outreach in Meghalaya. However, he refused to divulge further details.
