State BJP president Ernest Mawrie is likely to be replaced in view of the party’s worse performance in the recent Assembly elections.
The BJP has fielded candidates in all 60 seats but it won only in two seats where its sitting MLAs retained their seat.
According to political observers, the BJP candidates in South Shillong and Pynthorumkhrah won not because of the party but because of their personal efforts and charisma.
Most of the candidates forfeited their security deposits. In a few seats, NOTA got more votes than the BJP candidates.
The only seats where the party came second were North Shillong, Mawsynram, Raksangre, Raliang, Ranikor, Dalu and Baghmara.
“Since Mawrie himself lost the election, he should resign from the post of party president on moral ground,” a senior BJP leader said.
The defeat of the BJP in the Meghalaya polls despite the campaigning by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, party chief J P Nadda and other senior party leaders including Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma would force the party to go back to the drawing room.
The party has also spent a lot of money in advertisement campaigns both in the print, electronic media and digital media. But all of this did not pay off.
