Social activist Greneth Sangma, through a letter to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, has sought a relook into the education scene in South Garo Hills after he had earlier raised the matter of 26 schools without teachers in the district.
He further urged the CM to ensure schools in the district were provided with adequate infrastructure and the appointment of teachers on an urgent basis to ensure the Right to Education (RTE) Act was not violated for rural students.
SGH along with several other districts in Garo Hills face an acute shortage of teachers following the termination of contractual teachers.
“There is a need for immediate repair of dilapidated schools in the district and the appointment of teachers following the termination of contractual teachers. Out of a total of 512 schools in the district, at least 66 face an acute teacher shortage, with 99 teaching vacancies,” said Greneth in his letter.
He also sought the conduct of MTET exams for those teachers whose services were terminated by the government so that they are not rendered unemployed.
“The state was adjudged the ‘worst performing state’ in terms of education and it is urged that education should be the first priority to save the state’s reputation as an education hub. This was also promised by you when assuming office,” added Greneth.
