Social activist Greneth Sangma has questioned the Block Development Officer of Baghmara, South Garo Hills, Seinfield Ch Sangma, after the latter supposedly backed out of his promises to reconstruct a bridge that was to be built through job card wages.
In a release sent yesterday Grenith stated that 13 villages under the block had agreed to use their wages under the rural employment guarantee scheme (MGNREGS) to allow for the construction of a bridge across the Rompa River. The completion of the project would have been immensely beneficial to all 13 villages that had signed the agreement.
“Due to the Covid-19 lockdown, work on the bridge was stopped completely due to a lack of workers. When the rains came last year, it washed away the main deck structures along with other structures of the under-construction bridge. When we approached the BDO through the steering committee, the BDO was unwilling to help despite promising to re-estimate the project to ensure its completion,” said the social activist.
“We condemn the lackluster attitude of the BDO towards such an important development for us and for reneging on his promise to take necessary steps to re-estimate and complete the project. We demand that the project is taken up sincerely once again as it will affect the lives of the 13 villages, including school children, businessmen as well as local villagers for the better once completed,” added Sangma through the release.
