Nongpoh, Aug 5: The Synjuk Ki Rangbah Shnong Ri-Bhoi District convened an urgent meeting today to deliberate on two issues, namely the opening of Pine Club and activities therein and the frequent power cuts in the district.
Regarding Pine Club, at Mawsmai, Jorabat, while it describes itself as a place where families can come and relax, the club on the Assam-Meghalaya border has been accused by a pressure group of not following proper legal procedures and of being run as a nightclub with gambling taking place on the premises.
The Mawsmai village dorbar had issued a no-objection certificate (NOC) five months ago only for holding public gatherings and indoor games but this would not cover the running of a nightclub or for gambling activities on the property.
Today the Synjuk resolved to oppose the club due to the alleged nightclub and gambling activities. The headmen body noted that it had previously opposed the setting up of casinos in Ri-Bhoi and now a similar establishment has emerged in the form of a nightclub with gambling activities. The Synjuk decided to submit a formal letter to the Deputy Commissioner and to conduct an immediate inspection of the Pine Club located at Queen Hotel, Jorabat.
On the second issue, Synjuk general secretary PB Sylliang stated that the headmen have resolved to meet the Power Minister to oppose the installation of smart meters in the district and to press for the commissioning of the 132 KV power station and also to provide regular supply of power in Ri-Bhoi.
