Shillong, Jul 25: Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong today said that the state’s Sports Policy provides special recognition for those sportspersons who are employees of the government.
“Promotion has to be considered to them,” Tynsong said.
The Deputy Chief Minister was speaking at the felicitation programme for Wandalin Syiemiong and Alan Marbaniang who won gold medals at the World Police and Fire Games, BHM 2025 held in Birmingham, Alabama, USA.
He also said that as a token of love and respect special assistance will also be two both Syiemiong and Marbaniang.
The Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Home said that the government has tried to bring in new initiatives in sports.
Tynsong said that sports closely relates to the youngsters even as he added them to read the blueprint laid down in Sports Policy for inspiration.
He said that the state government has recognised around 37 disciplines even as he urged the youths to take up one such sports and specialize in it.
Tynsong also informed that the 2025-2026 budget in the sports sector Rs. 1900 crore has been earmarked.
“The opportunity is now in your door step. Therefore grab this chance,” the Deputy Chief Minister said.
State Sports Minister, Shakliar Warjri who also spoke on the occasion said that the police department has a lot of talents in terms of sports and with their discipline, dedication and hard work in the upcoming National Games more individuals from the department will win medals for the state.
Warjri also said that the government is building sports infrastructures in the state for there is a believe that there is a need to provide the best for the people.
He also said that the Sports Department will provide grant-in-aid for Syiemiong and Marbaniang.
Meanwhile, Director General of Police (DGP), Idashisha Nongrang informed that a Meghalaya Police Sports Board will be set up to look at factors to inculcate and encourage sporting activities in the department.
Nongrang said that incentives like additional increments, out of turn promotions, rewards will be given to individuals excelling in sports.
The DGP said that the stories of Syiemiong and Marbaniang are inspiring.
“Wandalin (Syiemiong) is a mother and despite that her daily routine is really something we need to learn from. She wakes up at 3 am and from 3:30 am to 6 am she goes for training and comes back and does her household chores, drops her children to school and comes for duty and goes back home and does other things that are needed to be done as a mother,” the DGP said.
Nongrang said that Syiemiong has a dream of achieving big things.
On Marbaniang she said that he goes to bed with a grip in his hands so that he is able to exercise his wrists, his hands even as he falls asleep.
