Shillong, Jul 25: The Hynniewtrep Youths Council (HYC) met with Health and Family Welfare Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh, demanding strict and cogent actions against sponsored MBBS students under the state quota who have not reported back to the government for fulfilling the conditions of the bond-cum-agreement.
According to the HYC, out of 359 students sponsored by the state government to pursue MBBS courses between 2015-2016 and 2019-2020, around 96 students have not reported back to the government after completing their courses.
The HYC pointed out that the state government had incurred crores of rupees in public funds for these students’ courses and this should be recovered from them with interest.
The pressure group urged the government to take strict actions against these erring students, including making them pay the whole course fee along with interest to the state government for non-fulfillment of the conditions agreed upon in the bond.
The HYC also suggested raising the bond amount to Rs 1 crore with effect from 2026-2027 for undergoing MBBS courses under the state government quota with five years of compulsory rural services.
The HYC also highlighted the issue of vacant posts in various CHCs, PHCs and sub-centers across Khasi-Jaintia Hills, including Ri-Bhoi. According to the HYC, there are around eight vacant posts of medical officers, seven specialist posts, 10 paramedical posts, and 100 nursing and ministerial staff posts that are yet to be filled.
The group also urged the government to establish dialysis units in government hospitals and CHCs across Khasi-Jaintia Hills to support patients suffering from renal diseases.
