In a bid to enhance the safety and security of travelers, the Meghalaya government will soon roll out a new initiative requiring commercial vehicle owners to prominently display key information about their drivers.
Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh today said the measure aims to instill confidence among tourists and passengers by increasing transparency and accountability within the state’s transport sector.
“As part of this initiative, all commercial vehicles operating in Meghalaya will have to display essential driver information – including the driver’s name, licence number, contact details and address – in a visible manner,” Lyngdoh said.
He explained that the move is intended to deter criminal activities involving commercial transport and boost the overall sense of security for commuters. “By knowing who is driving them, passengers will feel safer and more secure,” he added.
The rule will apply to all commercial vehicles registered with permits issued by the state Transport Department through the District Transport Officers (DTOs). However, privately owned vehicles, government vehicles, and vehicles under government corporations and undertakings will be exempt. It is, however, unclear if or how the rule will apply to commercial vehicles in Meghalaya that are registered in other states.
Once the official notification is issued, vehicle owners will be given a one month window to comply with the directive. Lyngdoh said the measure is expected to significantly improve the state’s safety framework, especially in light of the growing footfall of tourists.
“This is part of our broader effort to strengthen the tourism ecosystem and ensure that Meghalaya continues to be seen as a safe and welcoming destination,” he added.
