Cham Cham, a village located 18 kilometers from Khliehriat in the East Jaintia Hills district, is making strides in sustainable agriculture.
Known for its tourism potential and a strong commitment to natural farming—evidenced by the participation of 70 per cent of its farmer Self-Help Group (SHG) members—Cham Cham has recently implemented an innovative irrigation solution: a solar water pump.
This solar pump is managed by the Iaseinlang Village Organisation (VO), which oversees one of the farmer groups in the area. The pump is stationed with Nilam Phawa, an Internal Community Resource Person (ICRP) who advocates for natural farming practices within the community.
The project was made possible through funding from KFW, a German development bank, which contributed 50 per cent of the required investment. The Meghalaya State Rural Livelihoods Society (MSRLS) and MBDA played a crucial role in mobilizing this initiative within the village.
The solar water pump, which has a total cost of 3.05 lakhs, is intended to enhance the irrigation capabilities for off-season vegetables. The financial backing from KFW, along with land development and labour support from the VO, has facilitated this project.
This pump is set to benefit eight nearby SHGs by providing essential irrigation water during the dry season. This enhancement in irrigation infrastructure not only aims to improve agricultural productivity but also seeks to uplift local livelihoods by fostering sustainable farming practices in the region.
