The Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) of South Garo Hills observed World Zoonosis Day on Sunday by organising an awareness programme and animal health camp at Warima village under Chokpot block.
The event aimed to raise awareness about zoonotic diseases – i.e. those that can be transmitted between animals and humans – and to promote preventive animal healthcare in the rural community.
Under the leadership of Athokpam Haribhushan, Principal Scientist and Head, the programme included sessions conducted by Rupam Bhattacharjya (SMS, Livestock Production) and Tanya R Marak (SMS, Plant Protection). The discussions centred on the causes, symptoms, prevention and control of prevalent zoonotic diseases, with an emphasis on community-level awareness and action.
To support the outreach efforts, a locally translated leaflet titled ‘Rabies: Symptoms, Prevention & Control’ was distributed among participants.
More than 30 dogs were vaccinated against rabies, a deadly yet preventable viral disease, at the camp. Additionally, deworming tablets were provided to livestock and pet owners to help control internal parasites and improve overall animal health.
The rabies vaccines for the camp were provided by the Clinical Laboratory Tura, under Meghalaya’s Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary.
