Renowned historian and Padma Shri awardee Prof. David Syiemlieh delivered a special lecture today at Assam Don Bosco University, encouraging students to pursue their aspirations and engage deeply with the study of history in its various dimensions.
Syiemlieh, who is also a member of the university’s Board of Management, shared insightful reflections on the importance of historical awareness, the understanding of regional histories, and the transformative power of education.
“History is not merely a record of dates and events; it is a profound field of study that fosters a comprehensive understanding of the human experience — the challenges, struggles, and triumphs of past generations. It involves the pursuit of untold or lesser-known narratives that deserve recognition,” he remarked.
Syiemlieh also discussed his personal research interests, including the presence and influence of the Portuguese in the Northeastern states of India, His archival investigations in London related to Tirot Sing Syiem, a revered freedom fighter from Meghalaya, and his significant role in establishing the Northeast India Museum at the UPSC office in New Delhi.
The event was attended by a large number of students from the university, alongside Fr. Jose Palely, Vice-Chancellor of Assam Don Bosco University, Fr. Bivan Mukhim, Vice Provincial of the Guwahati Province, faculty members, and other dignitaries.
In addition to the lecture and interactive sessions, the day also featured a tree-planting ceremony and a cultural exhibition of traditional attire, with enthusiastic participation from the university students.
