The Hynñiewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC) of West Khasi Hills has sounded the alarm on alleged discrepancies in ration rice distribution, urging authorities to take immediate action.
The pressure group claims that there have been instances of excessive reductions in the quantity of ration rice being distributed through wholesalers, severely affecting the public.
According to the HYC, records show that sacks are often mislabeled, with some containing 46kg marked as 52kg and others containing 47kg recorded as 56kg. It is only when the rice reaches villages, that local dealers using digital weighing machines found significant discrepancies.
The HYC has expressed satisfaction with the digital weighing machine system, which has brought transparency to the distribution process. However, the organisation is concerned that this system is only being used at the dealer level and not with wholesalers.
The HYC demands that the government implement this system from the level of wholesalers or even the Food Corporation of India (FCI) to ensure transparency and fairness.
