The Ri Bhoi Poultry Farmers Association (RBPFA) has urged the State government to provide subsidies on poultry feed as rising feed costs have caused financial strain on the farmers.
Members of the association today met with Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister Alexander Laloo Hek to express their concerns regarding the drastic drop in poultry prices, which has severely impacted poultry farmers in the district.
The association said due to the unstable market prices, many poultry farmers are struggling and even reconsidering to carry on with farming as they are unable to secure fair rates for poultry in local markets.
RBPFA president E. Lapang and vice president A. Diengdoh told reporters that the minister assured them that the state government will take proactive steps to address their concerns and would convene a meeting with poultry farmers across the state to find a viable solution to the problem.
Additionally, the association raised concerns over influx of poultry from outside the state, stating that this has affected local poultry farmers. In response, the government has reportedly halted the import of poultry from other states due to an outbreak of avian flu in certain regions.
