Governor Chandrashekhar H Vijayashankar today said that Meghalaya, with its rich cultural heritage, must continue to foster an environment where human rights are respected and upheld, particularly for the marginalized and vulnerable sections of society.
Speaking at a function to observe the International Human Rights Day organised by the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) at the State Convention Centre, here the Governor emphasised the importance of safeguarding human rights in every sphere of life and stressed the role of society in ensuring justice, fairness, and equality.
Meghalaya State Commission for Protection of Child Rights chairperson Agatha K Sangma and MHRC chairperson Justice T. Vaiphei also spoke about the significant progress made in protecting human rights in the state, with a particular focus on children’s rights and the work of various commissions in ensuring justice for those whose rights have been violated.
The event saw the participation of senior government officials from different departments, probationary trainee officers from North-East Police Academy, activists, law students and citizens.
The event focused on raising awareness about the importance of human rights and promoting a culture of equality and dignity for all.
It was also aimed at strengthening the understanding of human rights and encouraging active participation in safeguarding these rights at all levels.
