Nongthymmai MLA Charles Pyngrope today suggested the need to create more infrastructure to accommodate drug users and also the need for the government to speed up the pace given how fast the speed in which the problem is growing.
Pyngrope has always been very vocal in the assembly and has urged the government to address this issue at the earliest. He recalled that during this last autumn session of the house, they discussed it at length with the number of drug users in the state now at 3 lakh.
Stating that it is a matter of concern, Pyngrope stated that some of the suggestions which were raised by the honourable members from the opposition are valid where they need to create infrastructure in every district that can accommodate the drug users and addicts to be rehabilitated.
“We can’t depend just on private enterprise alone. This is a subject which has to be taken into consideration or taken very seriously by the department or the government as a whole,” said the TMC state president.
He also cited how an NGO in his constituency are facing challenges to take the addicts to the centres with the unavailability of vehicles. Most of the addicts that they get a hold are aggressive and needs to be dealt with carefully.
The TMC legislator has now ensured to include one vehicle in the SRW Scheme so that the NGOs can be provided to do this work.
“But I will still say that just by me doing it will not solve the problem. Government has to come forward and at a fast speed. Building infrastructure is very important, because you need to house them for at least a year minimum. Government has taken a proactive step. It needs to be accelerated, considering the pace in which the problem is growing,” added Pyngrope.
