Meghalaya’s lone Rajya Sabha MP, Wanweiroy Kharlukhi, has called for an independent inquiry into alleged irregularities in the Meghalaya Public Service Commission (MPSC), in part to restore the reputation of the commission’s members who are innocent.
Kharlukhi’s wife, Corina Lyngdoh, is a member of the MPSC and the constant accusations of malpractice in the state government job recruitment process has tarnished his family’s reputation, the MP said. He also promised to resign if his wife is found guilty.
In a letter to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, Kharlukhi expressed his concern about the recent news regarding irregularities in the MPSC. Therefore, he requested the government to conduct an independent inquiry into the matter.
Briefing reporters, he emphasised the importance of conducting a fair inquiry based on facts rather than rumours.
Kharlukhi also highlighted the need for thorough investigation by the press and criticised the tendency to report news based on hearsay without concrete evidence.
Additionally, Kharlukhi pointed out that baseless allegations of corruption are often made against the ruling National People’s Party (of which he is a member) and he encouraged a more focused and evidence-based approach to such claims. He referenced a recent case involving damning allegations made by state Congress chief Vincent H Pala against Deputy CM Sniawbhalang Dhar over the drug trade and illegal coal, saying that such accusations have to be backed up with evidence.
