The Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE) is all set to conduct a second examination for failed students within two month’s time starting from 2025.
The first main board examination will be held in February-March, 2025 and the supplementary board examination will be held in May, 2025.
The objective is to allow unsuccessful students to reappear for the board exam within one-two months’ time after they failed the examination.
Further, from 2026-2027 academic sessions onwards, there will be no more optional subjects in SSLC examination and students have to pass all six subjects.
This major decision of the Education Department by amending the MBOSE Regulation for Secondary School Leaving Certificate Examination, 2011 was approved during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma here today.
“With this decision, MBOSE will be having two board examinations in a year starting from next academic year 2025 onwards,” Education Minister Rakkam A. Sangma said while addressing the media after the cabinet meeting.
“The first board examination will be held in the month of February or early of March and the second examination is for those who failed in all subjects or one or two-three subjects. They will be allowed to reappear for the board exam within one-two months’ time meaning by the month of May,” he said.
Marak said that the government’s decision is in line with the National Education Policy (NEP).
“This has been done to support the students because now supplementary examinations used to be held after a gap of one year but now the supplementary examination will be held within the same academic year to save the one year lost to the Class X students,” the minister added.
He further informed that from 2026-2027 academic sessions onwards, there will be no more optional subjects and the best of five subjects will not be there anymore.
“All students will have to pass all the six subjects in the board examination,” Sangma said.
Meanwhile, the cabinet also approved the Meghalaya Farmers Empowerment Commission Amendment Bill, 2024 where the retirement age of the Chairman of the commission has been increased from 65 to 70 years.
It was also decided that under the Meghalaya Benami Transaction Prohibition Rules, 2024 the Deputy Commissioner of the respective district will be the authorised authority to receive complaints against Benami transactions.
Apart from approving the Meghalaya Subordinate Water Resources Engineering Engineering Rules, 2024, the cabinet also cleared the Meghalaya Public School Service Rules, 2024 for teachers and principals of the three public schools in Shillong, Jowai and Tura.
