The Green Tech Foundation (GTF) has demanded demolition of structures illegally erected on Wah Thangsniang, situated between Nongrimbah and Nongrim Hills locality here.
GTF leader, H Bansiewdor Nonglang and members today conducted an inspection at the site and emphasised the grave consequences of erecting concrete structures, which pose a threat to residents’ lives and properties along the river.
Nonglang highlighted that this construction violates the 2023 Meghalaya Water Bodies (Preservation and Conservation) guidelines by encroaching on the river.
He criticised the responsible party for disregarding norms and disrupting the natural flow of water in the river, causing inconvenience to the community.
GTF has lodged a complaint with the East Khasi Hills district administration and other relevant departments to dismantle the structures over the river.
If these complaints yield no results, they intend to pursue legal action through the court or the National Green Tribunal (NGT).
Additionally, Nonglang urged the respective dorbar shnongs to oppose this illegality and not remain passive bystanders.
