Turnout in yesterday’s Lok Sabha election has been revised upwards to 76.60 per cent, officials informed today.
There has been an increase of 5.58 per cent per cent voter turnout compared to the 2019, which was recorded at 71. 42 per cent
The Shillong parliamentary seat which recorded 73.78 per cent sees an increase of 8.30 per cent when compared to 2019 which was 65.48 per cent.
The voter turnout in Tura parliamentary seat recorded at 81.37 per cent sees a slight dip of 0.01 per cent compared to 2019 which was 81.38 per cent.
Provisional results from yesterday evening showed that only 74.19 per cent of the total 22, 26,457 voters had exercised their franchise. However, data from some polling stations, particularly those in rural areas, had not been submitted at that time.
The district with high voter turnout percentage in Shillong constituency was South West Khasi Hills with 79.52 per cent, followed by Eastern West Khasi Hills district with 77.78 per cent, East Jaintia Hills at 77.56 per cent, Ri Bhoi at 74.45 per cent, West Jaintia Hills 73.86 per cent, West Khasi Hills at 72.80 per cent and East Khasi Hills at 71.85 per cent.
For Tura constituency, South West Garo Hills stood high with 84.15 per cent, West Garo Hills at 81.38 per cent, South Garo Hills at 81.90 per cent, North Garo Hills at 80.84 per cent and East Garo Hills 79.60 per cent.
Ranikor in South West Khasi Hills, recorded the highest voter turnout at 80.55 per cent. The highest turnout in Garo Hills was Rajabala in West Garo Hills with 87.85 per cent.
The lowest turnout of voters in Shillong constituency was in South Shillong with 58.36 per cent and South Tura, which is represented by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma as its MLA, with 69.60 per cent.
In Shillong seat, incumbent MP Vincent H. Pala of the Congress is pitted against Ampareen Lyngdoh of NPP, Ricky A J Syngkon of VPP, Robertjune Kharjahrin of UDP and two independent candidates – Lakhon Kma and Peter Shallam.
For the Tura seat, incumbent MP Agatha Sangma of the NPP is locked in a four-corner contest against Saleng Sangma of Congress, Zenith Sangma of Trinamool Congress and independent candidate Laben Marak.
