Assam Rifles, the country’s oldest paramilitary force, celebrated its 189th Raising Day today.
The history of the Assam Rifles dates back to 1835 when it was formed under British rule as the Cachar Levy.
Lt Gen PC Nair, the Director General of Assam Rifles, and all ranks paid homage at the war memorial in Shillong to the martyrs who have sacrificed their lives for the country.
The DG complimented all ranks for their outstanding contribution in fighting insurgency in the North East and Kashmir.
During the past year, three battalions of Assam Rifles received the Chief of the Army Staff Unit Citation and five battalions received the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief Unit Citation.
In addition, personnel of the force were awarded with two Shaurya Chakra, eight Sena Medals, 412 Presidential and Governors Medals. The force has also excelled in sports by winning 163 medals at the national level and 22 medals at international level in various sports events in 2023-24.
Assam Rifles remains committed to modernise its equipment profile in terms of acquisition of state of art, weapons, surveillance and protective equipment, a press release stated today.
The force has created a first amongst the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs)in its Cyber Security Operation Centre to safeguard its networks from cyber intrusions and has signed a memorandum of understanding with universities to upskill its manpower and accredit the academic and training programme of Assam Rifles.
