The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has taken cognizance of a complaint filed by the Hynñiewtrep Youths Council (HYC) claiming that police had assaulted its members in Pynursla recently.
The pressure group had alleged that on February 24 an officer at the police station there had assaulted the HYC’s Riwar Mihngi circle president in the station.
The local unit of the HYC had gone there after intercepting and preventing a supposed attempt to smuggle buffaloes across the international border.
Instead of registering a complaint over the alleged smuggling, the police started abusing the HYC members and assaulted the president, the pressure group claimed.
In a press release today, the MHRC said that it has issued a notice to the Superintendent of Police of East Khasi Hills and given him 15 days to submit a detailed report.
