There are 160 electric vehicles (EVs) in Meghalaya although the number is less as compared to other states in the country.

In 2020, there are only three EVs in the State. The number grew to five in 2021 and rose to 42 in 2022.

In 2023 (till December 3), the number of EVs in the State jumped to 110.

Further, under FAME-II, the Central government has sanctioned 28 e-charging stations in the State.

The Ministry of Heavy Industries formulated a Scheme namely Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &) Electric Vehicles in India (FAME India) Scheme in 2015 to promote adoption of electric/ hybrid vehicles (xEVs) in India.

The Phase-1 of the scheme was available up to March 31, 2019 with a budget outlay of Rs 895 crore. This phase of FAME India Scheme had four focus areas – technological development, demand generation, pilot project and charging infrastructure components.

The Ministry of Heavy Industries had also sanctioned about 520 charging stations for around Rs 43 crore under Phase-I of FAME-India Scheme.

The Ministry also sanctioned 7432 EV charging stations to three Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) and 148 EV charging stations to other entities spread in all states and six Union Territories under FAME India Scheme Phase-II.

The Meghalaya government through the Meghalaya Electric Vehicle Policy 2021 has emphasised accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles for a clean and green environment in the State.

This policy aims to save five million litres of fuel, reducing 10,000kg of CO2 emission every day.

The objective of the Meghalaya Electric Vehicle Policy is to facilitate the adoption of at least 15 per cent electric vehicles in the State by 2025.

Under the policy, subsidies are offered for various categories of electric vehicles.

The Commissionerate of Transport will be the nodal agency for implementation of the provisions of this policy.
