Two suspected drug peddlers on their way from Mizoram to Jowai were arrested in East Jaiñtia Hills while transporting heroin in two tourist vehicles today.
The two are identified as Lorence Zomuanpuia of Assam Bazar, ARC, Shillong and Lalmalsawa of Hunthar Veng, Aizawl. The total weight of the contraband recovered from their possession was 559.76 grams worth Rs. 5.5 crore
Based on credible information, police set up a checkpoint at Nongsning and stopped two Tata sumos, bearing registration number ML-05-M-1597 and MZ-01-K-3872 at 8:30 am.
During the search four soap boxes were found in the first vehicle and another 44 soap boxes from the other. The boxes contained yellowish orange powder and preliminary tests confirmed heroin, with the first consignment weighing 43.33 grams and the other 516.43 grams.
A total cash of Rs 2,200 and two mobile phones were also seized by the police.
A case under sections of NDPS Act was registered at Khliehriat police station.
