In a bizarre case, a mother in Laitjem village has alleged that she found nails inside hard gelatine capsules prescribed for her 12-year old daughter by doctors at the Pomlum Primary Health Centre (PHC) in East Khasi Hills district.
According to the mother, the nails were discovered on Saturday from two out of 10 amoxicillin tablets prescribed by doctors at the PHC, for her daughter who was suffering from a toothache.
The mother, who did not want to disclose her identity, said the PHC is not responsible for the nails inside the medicine, but stated that the company manufacturing the drug is.
She said she wanted to raise the issue for authorities to be alert and conduct an enquiry into the lapses.
A team comprising of Senior Specialist in Pharmacology and person in charge of quality of drugs from MMDSL, Inspector of Drugs and logistics manager immediately visited the PHC to investigate into the case.
“Upon observation it was found that the alleged nail that was supposedly inside the capsule as claimed by the complainant was bigger than the capsule itself, which raises suspicion about the nature of the complaint,” the Inspector of Drugs said.
The inspection team said that random samples also suggest that no damages or nails or other foreign materials was found from other strips of medicines. The capsules in other facilities were also checked if there was any similar complaint, but there was none, the team added.
The capsules in question named, Amoxycillin Trihydrate Capsules IP (Labmox 250) was manufactured on April, 2023 by Laborate Pharmaceuticals India Ltd at Poanta Sahib, Himachal Pradesh.
Meanwhile, the Drug Inspector has informed the pubic to call helpline number 14410 for any complaints on drugs etc.
