The Jaiñtia National Council (JNC) has said that the State government and the law department has turned a blind eye to misconduct by the police in containing the protesters during a public hearing in Thangskai.
The JNC said the police had indulged in unlawful act against the public by use of excessive force even against women. This comes after a video surfaced of a woman being lathi-charged during the protest.
“It is disheartening to witness those who have taken an oath to protect and serve, betrayed the very trust we have bestowed upon them,” the JNC said.
The organisation further demanded a fair and impartial investigation into any reported misconduct and the government to take appropriate measures to prevent recurrence of similar acts.
Meanwhile, members of the JNC led by their President, Sambormi Lyngdoh met President of the Meghalaya Topcem Cement Limited RK Paree and demanded termination of the two employees for provoking the police to act against the protesters.
The JNC also demanded compensation for the injured people.
