With cases of conjunctivitis rising in Ri-Bhoi, the district’s health authorities today urged the public to immediately seek medical attention if they have symptoms of the disease.
District Medical and Health Officer Dr TS Momin and eye specialist Dr N Kharnaior today briefed reporters regarding the mounting concern over the outbreak of epidemic conjunctivitis affecting both adults and children.
Dr Momin and Dr Kharnaior stressed the importance of immediate medical attention for individuals grappling with this contagious eye infection. Often known as “pink eye”, epidemic conjunctivitis can easily be transmitted from person to person, especially in close quarters.
“Cases of epidemic conjunctivitis have surged within our district, prompting us to act swiftly,” Dr Momin said. “Those experiencing symptoms such as eye redness, itching and discharge must not delay seeking medical care. Quick treatment not only eases discomfort but also curtails the infection’s spread.”
They also warned against the use of non-prescription medications from pharmacies. “Using medications without proper medical guidance can exacerbate the condition and lead to adverse effects. It is crucial to consult a doctor before resorting to any eye medication,” Dr Kharnaior said.
Experts recommend maintaining proper hand hygiene through regular handwashing, refraining from touching the eyes with unwashed hands and adhering to personal cleanliness practices to curb infection transmission.
Community outreach initiatives will be used to disseminate accurate information about epidemic conjunctivitis and the necessity of seeking medical help in a timely manner.
Authorities are closely monitoring developments and collaborating with medical professionals to manage the outbreak effectively.
