The inquiry into the mob violence outside the chief minister’s mini secretariat in Tura has revealed lapses from the part of the West Garo Hills district police.
The police inquiry headed by Inspector General of Police (Law & Order) MK Singh and five other police officials will soon submit a report to the Director General of Police Lajja Ram Bishnoi.
Sources said that despite intelligence report of serious break down of law and order that may endanger the life of the Chief Minister, the police in Tura took the situation lightly.
On July 24, violence broke out outside the CM’s office while Chief Minister Conrad Sangma was holding a meeting with various organisations over their demands for a winter capital in Tura and retrospective implementation of roster system.
The violence which lasted for around three hours resulted in injuries to 18 police personnel and damage to 21 vehicles.
Police have so far arrested around 48 persons including women for their alleged involvement in instigating the violence, which according to the state police was a conspiracy to murder the Chief Minister. Most of the arrested were accused of being members of BJP and Trinamool Congress.
Trinamool Congress leader Richard M. Marak who had fought against the chief minister in the Assembly polls, was among those arrested.
It may be mentioned that a magisterial probe was also instituted.
