The Faculty of Arts and Culture along with the Department of Tourism and Travel Management and the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics observed International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples at Martin Luther Christian University here today.

The programme was graced by Rudy Wahlang, the founder of internationally renowned band Soulmate.

The chief guest highlighted the importance of observing such a day and the role it plays in sending a message of peace. The programme kickstarted with an inter-school quiz that focused on themes like current affairs, history, entertainment, sports and indigenous culture.

Eight schools participated in the quiz and BK Bajoria emerged as the winners, while Loreto Convent were second and St Anthony’s Secondary School third.

The second part of the programme included performances of an indigenous group chant by MLCU students, a musical play, Khasi drum ensemble, as well as a musical medley fusing different cultures of the North East.

Other off-stage attractions incorporated face paintings, a temporary tattoo exhibiting indigenous motifs and designs led by local artists Careen Langstieh, Balaiamon Kharngapkynta and Casper Syiem.

A food sale-cum-exhibition of traditional cuisines through a culmination of students from various departments, indigenous slow food and traditional snacks were prepared by the students from different North East states.
