To commemorate the fifth year of the Meghalayan Age, the Faculty of Arts and Culture at Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU) organised an event on the theme, ‘The Meghalayan Age: Our Unique Geodiversity, Biodiversity and Cultural Assets’, which was held today on the university campus.
The Faculty of Arts and Culture includes the Department of Music, School of Language and Literary Studies and the Department of Environment and Traditional Ecosystems. The Department of Tourism and Travel Management also collaborated in the event.
MLCU Chancellor Glenn C Kharkongor also gave a brief presentation on the origins of Meghalayan Age and why this new geologic age was named after Meghalaya. He explained how Mawmluh cave, one of the longest and deepest caves in Meghalaya, showed conditions that were suitable for preserving chemical signs of the transition in ages.
Prizes were also distributed to the winners of the various competitions that were held prior in the week leading to Meghalayan Age Day. The competitions included a smartphone photography competition, digital photography competition and handmade poster competition and were open to schools and colleges.
The winner of the handmade poster competition was Liza Rani Basumatary of Lady Keane College. In the smartphone photography competition, first prize was won by Albert Banlam. For the digital poster competition, first prize was won by Fennyzia Marbaniang of MLCU.
