The water level of the Umiam dam has increased by five feet following heavy rains during the last two days.
According to sources, the water level has gone up to 3170.34 feet from the earlier 3165 feet.
Umiam dam however needs to be filled up to its full capacity of 3220 feet in order to be able to fully generate electricity for the State.
Therefore, more heavy rains are required to meet the additional 50 feet of water at the dam.
Electricity generation from the Umiam hydel project was affected in the last few weeks as the water level at the dam is at its lowest. Authorities said recently that the power project is almost at the point of shutting down.
Since April, the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) has resorted to load-shedding all over the State for ten hours every day.
The State government was also compelled to spend Rs 3 crore per day to purchase electricity from other agencies outside the State.
