The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has approved to de-tag 21 villages of Mawshynrut area of West Khasi Hills from Rambrai-Jyrngam constituency.
The 21 villages under three polling stations of Misei, Langdongdai and Mawsmai that were earlier under Mawshynrut constituency were tagged under Rambrai-Jyrngam constituency under the delimitation of constituencies carried out by the KHADC.
This led to widespread protest from hundreds of villagers who stormed the KHADC last month.
The Joint Action Committee (JAC) leaders who led the protest have been camping in Shillong since yesterday, the day the Winter Session of the KHADC began.
JAC chairman Jeremiia Dkhar said, “We are pleased that the KHADC has given in to the demand of the people from 21 villages but this decision needs to go to the District Council Affairs (DCA) and get approval from the Governor.”
He also requested the Deputy Chief Minister in charge of DCA, Prestone Tynsong, to help voters of these 21 villages so that they can vote in Mawshynrut constituency in the upcoming MDC elections, as usual.
He said the JAC would soon meet with the Deputy Chief Minister to discuss the matter.
