A conglomeration of pressure groups and traditional heads from Jaiñtia Hills today urged the MDA government to review the outdated State reservation policy.

The JCCRP comprises of the Synjuk Waheh Chnong Ri Jaiñtia, Synjuk Waheh Chnong Jowai and pressure groups based in Jaintia Hills – Jaiñtia Students’ Union (JSU), Jaiñtia Youth Federation (JYF), Jaiñtia Students’ Movement (JSM) and East Jaiñtia National Council (EJNC).

In a memorandum submitted to Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, the JCCRP said that it had organised a joint meeting held in Jowai on April 12 to discuss the State Reservation Policy.

Urging the State government not to initiate the reservation roster since the time the reservation policy came into effect in 1972, the JCCRP said “the government should review and revamp this outdated State reservation policy of 1972 as now with the growing number of population and educated youth in the State the reservation policy seems more like a discrimination and bias against some tribes”.

“In fact our Garo brothers are somehow doing well with their 40 per cent share of the State reservation policy whereas we the Khasi and Jaiñtia community have to compete among ourselves with deficient share of 40 per cent. It’s high time for the government to begin and carry out to review the outdated reservation policy so that it benefitted all the three tribes,” the JCCRP said in the memorandum.
