The District Magistrate, East Khasi Hills District has banned the use of nylon or synthetic threads used in the flying of kites in the district as well as the use of Chinese manja, the powdered glass that is traditionally used on the kite strings.
“Since several accidents have taken place in the past due to the use of such threads, the manufacturer, sale, storage and use of Chinese manjha/nylon/glass-coated/synthetic is also prohibited for kite flying,” the DM said in a prohibitory order today.
Violators shall be penalised under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, prevention of cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, Indian Penal Code and other provisions of law, the order added.
