The students from the Department of Environment and Traditional Ecosystems, Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU) in collaboration with the PHE Department, Government of Meghalaya conducted a street play titled “Personification of Umkhrah” on March 18 and March 20 in the busy streets of Police Bazaar and Laitlyngkot Market respectively.
The play in Police Bazaar was performed in English whereas in Khasi for the crowd in Laitlyngkot. The performance was interactive, inclusive of song and dance.
This initiative was carried out as a part of the World Water Day celebration to bring awareness to the community on the importance of the conservation of water resources as well as to keep our water systems clean and pristine which is in line with this year’s theme “Accelerating change to solve the water and sanitation crisis”.
Meanwhile, the School of Social Work, MLCU celebrated World Social Work Day yesterday which is observed every year on the third Tuesday of March. The theme this year is ‘Respecting Diversity Through Joint Social Action’.
The students carried out flash mobs, street plays, puppet shows and a signature campaign in Laitumkhrah and Motphran simultaneously. The performances highlighted the ‘Importance of Relationship and Respecting Others’ with a main focus on three areas: Family, Friends and Community.
After the street play, the students interacted with the members of the public in order to enable reflections of what they learnt through the street play.
Thereafter, a signature campaign was also organised where members of the public took a pledge to respect people’s diversity.
In another programme, the Department of Literature from the School of Language and Literary Studies, MLCU, hosted a World Poetry Day celebration by organising an inter-college poetry contest today at the MLCU Hall, Nongrah. Participants from colleges and universities from different parts of the North East took part and the winners were announced during the World Poetry Day programme at the MLCU hall.
The judges and panelists were professors and poets from St. Mary’s College, St. Anthony’s College and Shillong College. The top five winners had the opportunity to read out their poems while the panelists discussed the merits of each of them.
The winners were Akansha Priyadarshini (St. Anthony’s College), Marbamonlang Rani (St. Anthony’s College), Chongboi Singson (Nagaland University), Sardonyx Mylliemngap (St. Edmund’s College) and Sharodi Hazarika (NEHU).
