Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong today said Mukroh village is well within Meghalaya.
This came after Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s written statement in the Assam Assembly today Mukroh is a part of West Karbi Anglong district.
“I do not know why the Assam chief minister made such a statement. Mukroh lies within the jurisdiction and is in the possession of Meghalaya,” Tynsong told reporters.
Tynsong said the second round of the border talks with Assam will resume soon, and it will put an end to all such claims. “Both the states are in the process of negotiating the boundary issue.” he said.
The Assam Chief Minister’s statement has also drawn strong reactions from various organisations in the state too.
The Jaiñtia Student Union (JSU) said the statement made by Sarma was misleading and will trigger a rift between two states.
The union said Mukroh falls under the jurisdiction of the Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous District Council. The CM of Assam should have based on facts before speaking in his Assembly, the JSU said.
The Khun Hynñiewtrep National Movement (KHNAM) said the statement is baseless and uncalled for. “The Mukroh Village is a non-disputed area and falls under the jurisdictions of the State of Meghalaya,” KHNAM said.
Stating that even the 1951 notification upheld that Mukroh is part of Meghalaya the KHNAM said, “Such a statement will only create fear amongst our brothers who are residing at Mukroh village and other villages along the inter-state border.”
“We have seen the Deputy Chief Minister’s reply to the press that Mukroh is well under Meghalaya, but the statement made by the Assam CM in the floor of the assembly is serious and the Meghalaya government needs to convey its state officially to our counterpart,” it said.
