The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) may have the deepest pockets of any political party but the Congress Party is banking on the people’s will, their support and blessings.
This was stated by one of the party’s star campaigners, former Union minister Sachin Pilot here today.
Pilot was more recently the Deputy Chief Minister of Rajasthan but lost that role after what was described as a “failed revolt” against the CM, Ashok Gehlot in 2020. Although it was rumoured that he would leave the party for the BJP, he stayed loyal.
The mass migration of elected representatives from one party to another is something that does not augur very well for our polity, he stated today, referring to the bed hopping prevalent among Meghalaya MLAs, which left the Congress with no legislators at all in the outgoing Assembly.
He added that, with most of the political leaders in the state, no matter where they are today, they got their political start in the Congress.
“The relationship between the Congress and Meghalaya is generational. It’s been there for decades. And now is a time of reckoning, where people have many options. There are many parties which are trying to spread their wings in the state. There are many parties that are playing a game of who can be the broker in the end but the Congress has a long history, a long association, commitment and performance,” Pilot claimed.
On the BJP, the Congress figure lashed out at the saffron party for being part of the state government for the past five years yet accusing its coalition partners of corruption.
Pilot also put a positive spin on the mass desertion of senior Congress figures in recent times, saying that the party has deliberately given tickets to young men and women who are qualified professionals, with moral standing and principles and who are committed to the people of the state.
“Ten of our 60 candidates are women, which is a first,” he said. “I think this will reflect the true demography of the state.”
