Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma today met National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Chairman Justice Arun Kumar Mishra and sought the intervention of the commission into the Mukroh firing incident which claimed six lives.
Five villagers from Mukroh in West Jaiñtia Hills and an Assam forest guard died in indiscriminate firing by the Assam police on November 22.
Sangma, accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, gave a detailed account of the firing incident to the NHRC Chairman and other members of the commission.
“We explained how this was a human rights violation. We have asked for the NHRC support as it’s a clear case of human rights violation,” Sangma said in a tweet after meeting the NHRC.
He also said that he apprised the NHRC about the actions that have been taken like CBI inquiry into the matter.
The chief minister also stressed on the need for proper sensitisation of forces deputed in the sensitive border areas to prevent such incidents.
The meeting was also attended by NHRC Member Rajiv Jain, Secretary General Devendra Kumar Singh, Meghalaya Home Secretary Cyril V D Diengdoh and senior officials of Meghalaya government.
Yesterday, the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has also taken suo-motu cognizance of the Mukroh village incident.
The MHRC has directed the Meghalaya Chief Secretary to submit a detailed report into the incident within 15 days, an official statement said.
It may be mentioned that Home Minister Amit Shah yesterday assured Sangma that the CBI would probe the Mukroh firing incident.
Incidentally, the Assam government also requested the Centre for an enquiry by the CBI into the incident.
