The North East Zone Cultural Centre (NEZCC), in collaboration with the Directorate of Arts and Culture, organised a programme of theatre, folk dance and patriotic songs today evening to celebrate Khasi patriot and freedom fighter U Tirot Sing Syiem through Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav in Nongkhlaw, Eastern West Khasi Hills.
Mairang MLA and Speaker of the Assembly Metbah Lyngdoh was the chief guest in the presence of the Syiem of Hima Nongkhlaw, PM Syiemlieh, and others.
During his address Lyngdoh stated that the celebration of U Tirot Sing’s legacy through Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav serves as a reminder to one and all of the valour and fighting spirit of the freedom fighters of the state and provides an opportunity to citizens to make fitting contributions to the welfare and upliftment of society through their respective traits and talents.
Lyngdoh also took the occasion to urge upon citizens to draw inspiration from the teachings exhibited by the life and times of U Tirot Sing, who fought valiantly against British occupation to preserve the culture and identity of the Khasi Hills.
The programme featured cultural songs, dances and a skit presented by different artistes of the district and Shillong.
