Meghalaya Police seized 1168.182 kgs of ganja worth Rs 3.5 crore from a container truck in West Jaiñtia Hills district in the wee hours today.
District Superintendent of Police, Bikram D Marak said that the truck bearing registration number RJ.10 GB 1424 was on its way from Jowai and was directed to stop by the personnel from the Ummulong beat house during a routine vehicle checking at Mookyndur.
He said while the vehicle did stop after a distance before the checkpoint, two persons alighted from the vehicle and fled the scene. While a hot pursuit was made by the men on duty, the pair managed to escape taking advantage of the darkness.
“Accordingly, the vehicle was checked at around 1:30 am and on entering the driver’s cabin, very strong odour of Ganja/Marijuana was emitting from the cargo area of the said vehicle,” Marak said in a statement.
After a thorough search of the vehicle along with the ANTF, police recovered the ganja packed in 80 sealed rectangular packets, he added.
A case has been registered and investigation is on.
Meanwhile, Director General of Police LR Bishnoi said all policemen who managed to stall the huge consignment will be rewarded.
