Concerning the spate of hate crimes that took place in and around Shillong lately, the East Shillong MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh has stressed on the need for self-policing.
“Every community has these issues but the moment self-policing is inculcated then there will be self-restraint and self-control and people should act responsibly,” she told Highland Post.
“I may have a lot of issues around me, I may be unemployed, not getting the equal opportunity as my neighbour but deep in my heart I must have self-control and respect for other human beings because communal disputes are not going to take anyone anywhere,” she said.
The legislator also said that actions in our state can have consequences far beyond, with Meghalayans living in other parts of the country at risk of retaliatory acts.
“We need to ensure that there are bigger opportunities and avenues for inter-cultural exchanges of students from one state to another, sharing of information and ideas and inculcating the national spirit in educational institutions,” she said.
Meanwhile, with regard to rampant thefts in the city, Lyngdoh said that, following the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, these menaces have returned with a fury.
“A collective effort should be put in and localities should start engaging patrol agencies and personnel and install CCTVs like in other cities,” she added.
