The Khasi Jaiñtia Presbyterian Synod Sepngi will organise a series of charitable football matches as part of the centenary celebration of the Dr H Gordon Roberts Hospital, Jaiaw.
Speaking to the media yesterday, the secretary of the organising committee, Rev JR Thabah, said that the aim is to raise funds for the hospital, which was founded in 1922.
The hospital authorities plan to build an annexe, the ‘Centenary Building’, which will be next to the existing building. The construction will be accomplished in a phase-wise manner, with the construction of the ground floor, at a cost of Rs 7 crore, to begin shortly. It will contain a laboratory, records room, MRI and X-ray room, blood collection centre, pharmacy, orthopaedics and physiotherapy sections. The estimate for all five floors is Rs 44 crore.
The football matches will be between KJP Synod Sepngi pastors and MLAs and officials of the state government. The first match will be held in Nongstoin on July 6. Other matches will be held in Mawkyrwat (Aug 23), Umroi (Sep 17), Sohra (Oct 7) and Shillong (Oct 22).
“The hospital has been in need of expansion in terms of infrastructure, doctors, facilities and space for healthcare units,” the hospital’s administration officer, KW Marbaniang, said of the century-old institution.
