City police are yet to arrest the youths who attacked two students from Kerala at Jaiaw here even after nearly a week since the incident happened.
It may be mentioned that Rejaz M. Sydeek and Sarath S. Thambi, both students of Central University of Karnataka, were assaulted by a group of 30 bikers on June 24 at Jaiaw Pdeng. The assault took place at around 4:30 pm.
The two students have been in Shillong for nearly a month doing their internship with Impulse NGO. They were saved by the intervention of local shopkeepers and residents.
Soon after the assault, an FIR was filed at the Lumdiengjri police station by Impulse NGO Case Manager, Bariphylla Lyttan.
On June 25, Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui had assured that the attackers would be nabbed in a matter of 24 to 48 hours.
However, till date, none of the attackers have been arrested.
“Investigation is on into the case,” a police official said.
It may be mentioned that many cases of assaults of non-tribals have been reported in the recent past in Jaiaw.
Local residents have blamed the police for the failure to trace and arrest the culprits who have brought a bad name to the area.
“Now, we fear for our children who are studying outside. These assaults should stop at once,” a lady from Jaiaw said.
Other residents have suggested strengthening of the police intelligence network in the entire Jaiaw area in order to thwart such incidents and identify persons involved in such assault cases.
