Editor,
What could have been a history for a state like Meghalaya which is a matrilineal society has proved to be short-lived with the current MDA coalition putting its weight behind an IPS officer from Assam for appointment as the chief of the Meghalaya police force.
Bearing no issues with Dr. L R Bishnoi, the newly appointed police chief of Meghalaya, what exactly led to the recommendation of the State government to the Central government for an officer from outside the State raises a number of serious questions despite the fact of having a lady, I Nongrang, as an acting DGP for an interim period till the declaration of the official notification.
Dr. Bishnoi being a “fresher” to the intricacies of law and order of Meghalaya and the vicious cycle of manipulation will surely learn through his experience when it comes to choosing the larger interests between his parent state of Assam and his new State of Meghalaya.
However, more ironic is the absence of the State Security Council of Meghalaya in being part of the decision process although internal law and order is a State subject. Having said that, the ruling MDA coalition led by NPP has just wasted an opportunity to promote its own and the silence of our vocal NGOs just adds to more discomfort.
