The Dorbar Shnong Tympang Iawmusiang in Jowai has suggested the district administration to continue to use the Mynkjai dumping site in Amlarem to dispose the accumulated waste from Iawmusiang, pending availability of a new site within three days.
Speaking to reporters today Ajoy K Lywait, waheh shnong informed that the suggestion was made at a general body meeting of the dorbar shnong wherein people have expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of Iawmusiang, in which waste had piled up for the last two months.
He said the Jowai Municipal Board (JMB) has been disposing waste at Mynkjai for the last 40 years. “During the last 40 years, there were no complications with regards to health of the people there. Besides the distance is safe enough when compared to the present situation we are facing in Jowai,” he said, adding, “Above all, we support the move for finding the new dumping place for the garbage from Jowai, which is also to be accorded priority.”
It may be mentioned that people in Mynkjai had protested against the dumping of garbage at Mynkjai complaining about the impact it has on the environment and the health of the people there. Since then the garbage in Jowai town have submerged the market, streets, lanes and roads since February and people are suffering day in and day out that even nearby shops, unable to bear the smell, have temporarily shut down their operations.
Lywait also said that since the JMB, which was once tasked with collection and disposal of garbage, has now stopped residents from other localities are left with no alternative but to also use the road at lawmusiang to thrown garbage from their homes.
Expressing concern on the failure of the concerned authorities to solve the garbage woes of Jowai the dorbar shnong also warned of action if the government fails to address the problem within three days.
