The Synjuk ki Waheh Shnong Jowai has welcomed the decision of the High Court and expressed hope that the garbage woes would be resolved.
The synjuk had filed a PIL before the court on April 7. Concerned with the problems faced by the residents the court yesterday asked the Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) and Jowai Municipal Board (JMB) to try their best to ensure the proper collection of uncollected garbage in Jowai and dispose the same in accordance with law.
President of the synjuk, Alan Niangti at a press conference today said there have been numerous agitations on the piled up garbage in a bid to air our grievance to the government but these always fall on deaf ears.
He said helpless, the synjuk had to file a PIL. “We are taking the matter forward and it is up to the government to take the responsibility how to restore cleanliness in Jowai,” he said.
While the local MLA, Wailadmiki Shylla had given his assurance time and again to look after the matter of the town, nothing was done, he added.
Secretary of the synjuk, Riquoma Rq. Laloo said with the order, the people are now certain that the waste will be removed.
The synjuk has also urged the people to take the responsibility to ensure cleanliness in Jowai and not to indiscriminately dump waste especially in areas of Syntu Ksiar, which is the source of drinking water.
It may be mentioned that the garbage problem in and around Jowai town has attracted a lot of media attention and has also been discussed in the budget session of the Assembly recently.
The dumped waste which has piled up for several weeks along the roads of the town and also near the Deputy Commissioner’s office is an impending health threat to the residents of the town.
Residents said that the smell is unbearable and swarms of flies are affecting the nearby localities where the garbage is dumped.
