Chief Minister Conrad Sangma today inaugurated a ‘sustainable energy solution’ project at the Umsawnongkharai Health and Wellness Centre in Ri-Bhoi.
The state government and SELCO Foundation had tied up to install solar energy panels and Sangma inaugurated the facility set up at Umsawnongkharai. The idea is that the solar energy generated at the health centre will act as a backup when the mains power supply is unstable. Vaccines, for example, need to be constantly kept at a certain temperature and thus require stable electricity supply for refrigeration.
Speaking on the occasion, Sangma lauded the initiative of SELCO Foundation for installing this solar power unit and appreciated the health workers under the National Health Mission and others in the state.
“The state government is also focusing on the health sector and large amounts of money were spent on healthcare with the sole aim to improve the sector, especially in rural areas,” the CM said while lauding the work and dedication of ASHA workers and other healthcare providers.
Today was also World Health Day and Sangma also urged the health workers to continue in their service to their fellow man.
Others present on the occasion were Umsning MLA Jason Sawkmie Mawlong, Ri-Bhoi Deputy Commissioner Arpit Upadhyaya, Mission Director of the National Health Mission Meghalaya R Kumar, CEO of Atal Incubation Centre SELCO Foundation D Ditismita Chowbay, District Medical and Health Officer Dr M Syiemlieh as well as ASHA workers and local residents.
