Restrictions have been imposed for any activities that will further pollute the Myntdu River in West Jaiñtia Hills district.
The district magistrate under Section 144 CrPC prohibits felling of trees in the vicinity of the river, sand mining and stone quarries along the river bed, washing of clothes and vehicles, dumping of spoils and waste materials, both solid and liquid, as well as waste/muck from road construction into the river.
The order said the quality of water in the Myntdu river is severely affected day by day due to washing of clothes and vehicles in the catchment areas, dumping of spoils and dirt, illegal collection of sand/stone from its river bed.
The Myntdu is long considered the guardian force of Jowai and its surrounding areas. The river, which flows into Bangladesh, is under severe danger of being buried by mountains of mud and stones.
