The Tura Garo Senior Citizens Forum (TGSCF) has today publicly given its support to protestors seeking the removal or resignation of Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) Chief Executive Member Rakesh Sangma.
In a release, the TGSCF said that the GHADC has been created to protect Garo tribal rights and that the CEM should therefore be a bonafide member of the community (though there is no legal prohibition on a non-Garo becoming CEM).
The choice of Rakesh as CEM, confirmed in a vote of his fellow MDCs, has not gone down well with pressure groups and civil society organisations as he is alleged to have followed his father’s Nepali customs rather than his mother’s Garo ones, a charge that the TGSCF repeated today.
